Hi - we frequently get calls about gas ovens stopping working completely.

We are able to solve virtually every one of these calls, over the phone and no visit or parts are required.

If you turn on your gas oven and absolutely nothing happens...... take a look first at your oven clock. Check that the time is showing correctly and there are no odd symbols like a bell, the letter 'A' or something unusual.

If there is, just try turning off the electric supply to the cooker for about 5-10 seconds - turning on again and resetting the clock. In most cases, the oven will miraculously work.

This is because there is a timer/programmer on most ovens which if set, will 'lock out' the oven control for immediate use. (it's waiting for the programmed time)

We get 30-40 calls a year about this (mainly around the time the clocks have just been changed) and solve them all over the phone.

Sadly, we hear of numerous occasions where gas engineers go out on a callout to reset the clock knowing full well that there is no real fault, just a clock reset.

This is commonly caused by grand-children pressing buttons on the oven facia or accidental pressing when cleaning and wiping down the front.

If this post saves just one person getting needlessly charged - it's worth it!

Enjoy your ovens.

It's that 'Clock Changing' time of year again.

Please note advice about ovens not working after changing times. Don't call somebody out - check your oven isn't set to 'Auto' first.

(Enjoy the extra hour)

Six months on and a timely reminder......

It's that 'Clock Changing' time of year again.

Please note advice about ovens not working after changing times. Don't call somebody out until - you've checked that your oven isn't set to 'Auto' first.

(Who nicked that extra hour or beauty sleep !)

Happy Summer time :)

Gosh - is it really getting to 'clock changing' time again !

Remember to check the oven clock is not set to 'auto' after changing the time next week.

Each year we hear of consumers who get charged 'callouts' because their ovens are not working after changing the clocks.

Just turn off the power .....back on.... and reset the clock to 'manual' if the cooker clock controls get confusing (and they invariably are).

Especially, please keep an eye out for elderly neighbours who may have problems with this, and panic when their cooker doesn't work. Apart from anything else, worth making sure that somebody vulnerable doesn't get caught out by the unscrupulous.

'That' time of the year looms again when we change the clocks in the house.......and forget how to do the one on the cooker.

(we ALL forget how to do the one on the cooker - you are not alone)

If you have an elderly neighbour, make sure they don't get ripped off calling somebody out to reset the cooker clock .....just because the oven stopped working.

And as the clocks change again - the oven 'phantom' breakdowns appear once more.

As before, please keep an eye out for elderly neighbours who may worry that their oven has packed up, when all it needs is the clock resetting properly. Save that 'rip-off' callout.
