Carpet and floor fitting jobs: trader tips

In addition to the pricing and completion time information, the recommended carpet and flooring fitters who participated in our survey also shared some helpful advice.

General

  • Most fitters will get rid of old carpets for you. But, businesses are charged for waste disposal – a cost the fitter is likely to pass onto you. Private individuals don’t have to pay to tip household waste so you’ll save money if you can remove the old carpet and dispose of it yourself.
  • Most fitters ask that furniture is removed from the room before they get there. If you are unable to do this yourself they can do it, but are likely to charge extra.
  • To make it easier to compare prices between different companies ask them to break down costs into labour (fitting) and materials (your chosen flooring).
  • Small jobs are proportionally more expensive. Some fitters charge a minimum fee (for example, for areas less than 10m square or for less than half a day) so you could end up paying over the odds for small jobs.

Research methodology

18 traders responded to the survey. Using their experience and expertise, they answered questions about the cost of popular jobs, and how long they should take to complete.
