You will find a number of pubs and cafes in this part of Hastings so the choice available for a meal at any time of the day is quite wide. trader is an old and unassuming pub on George St (No 13) that does not give any clue from the outside of the delightful meals available inside. While the pub area is quite small, the menu is very broad and caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have a specialism for fish dishes. The food that we had was superb. Both meals were perfectly presented and were exceptionally well cooked with top quality ingredients. I have seldom had a tastier steak pie, full of high quality meat and absolutely no waste. The dishes were complemented with perfect freshly cooked chips and fresh vegetables. As for price, we were pleasantly surprised at the low cost of the overall bill and we definitely intend to revisit this pub when in the area again.

If you want a traditional pub with good beer,a selection of good wines and good food you can do no better than to visit this pub. It is situated on the edge of the quaint little village of Trottiscliffe. The friendly atmosphere hits you as soon as you step in the door. My first visit was when my family took me there to celebrate my birthday. Being a happy occasion I thought it might have coloured my opinion, but on returning for a casual visit I found the atmosphere just as friendly, the beer, wine and food just as good and plentiful and if you are a crossword fan, stuck on a clue, there is always someone there happy to help with the answers!

We chanced on " trader " near Battle in East Sussex due to a road closure on our way to the South Coast. Its ancient appearance and the number of cars in the car park were enticements. The view from its car park is breathtaking over the "adders fields" which gave rise to the name "Netherfield". Reportedly on a clear day, one sees the Channel. Built in 1725, even at the start of October, the exterior is adorned with colourful hanging-baskets. The interior is decorated to a high degree of cleanliness, comfort and taste. I recognised attractive "Farrow and Ball" paint. It is spotlessly clean and, inspite of lowish ceilings, more of a small restaurant than a pub, in atmosphere. The garden is filled with large terracota pots, worthy of BBC's gardening programmes, with a wide range of delightful plants, in blossom. The lunch menu is reasonably priced with "dishes of the day" displayed on the wall albeit rather awkwardly, right over someone's table. Welcoming properietors, Mike and Sue, make every effort to accommodate special dietary requirements. Our waitress was notably kind, welcoming and helpful. The quality of our food was first class. Our dessert was particularly creative, and I will copy it at home. We felt fortunate to get a free table on a Sunday since this is clearly a popular venue between 12 noon and 3.30pm for discerning local senior citizens. Nevertheless, the noise level was not irritating. We would say that this is a perfect place for an affordable quality Sunday lunch at any time of the year. One can eat in the sun in the perfect walled garden, or inside in summer with the garden door open. It would be perfect for Christmas/New Year, with inglenook fireplaces. Advance booking is highly recommended - by Mike.

A handsome, good value and comfortable 15th century pub with friendly service next to a Premier Hotel. The pub-hotel duo offer a good value place to stay overnight. One can eat in the pub anytime, which also serves breakfast. We have always had excellent food here.

Have been to this pub twice in the last 12 months. Excellent choice, well cooked and good sized helpings, and not too heavy on the pocket. Will return.

Returned a second time on my Birthday after first being delighted with the food and drink last year. We were not disappointed. The customer service is excellent. All the staff are friendly, welcoming and make you feel that you are important to them. The food is well prepared, fresh and very tasty. There is a range of good, well kept beers. The setting and outlook onto the Downs is just so relaxing, and on a sunny day could not be bettered. They have a very informative website and will drop you a regular newsletter of forthcoming events if you let them have your email address. We will certainly be back again and again and . . .

Called in at lunch time on 10th March, for a pint and a meal, my pint of Harvey's was up to the usual very good standard and our food was very good, my steak and kidney pudding and my wife fish dish were promptly served with very generous portions at a reasonable cost. Have used this pub on many occasions in the last 5 years, will admit that the Sunday Lunchtime Carvery is best avoided as the pub is usually swarming with Familys, But Saturday lunchtime have always found a place to eat and enjoyed the atmosphere of a Typical Country Pub.
