After a slightly shaky start the new tenants are doing pretty well. Good everchanging range of bitters at lower prices than before !! Mostly the food is pretty good especially the Ham, double egg and chips and reasonably priced !! Had 2 Christmas meals there in one week !!, in two groups of friends - totalling 31 people and all very happy with the food and service. Will continue going there every week !!

The only real pub in Wheathampstead, trader seems to be going downhill under its new management. The food started out well at the reopening in October 14 but has deteriorated since. Plus, prices have risen. Under the previous management, it was actually Kim who ran the show and it was very successful. The first thing the new management did was fire Kim.....

Harry ably supported by Graham took over the old H Carr business and have totally revitalised this excellent neighbourhood fishmongers. Renamed trader - not to be confused with another successful family enterprise trader fish and Chips further along Pitschanger - itself well worth a visit - the fishmongers and deli has kept the old Edwardian fish display slab under a blue canopy with a kiosk and original tiling. The freshness and seasonal variety of the fish is excellent as often demonstrated by brish trade. The proprietor will happily guide less informed cooks on a choice of fish / crab / lobster / squid and how to prepare the item. Descaling requests are swiftly fulfilled. In short this regenerated fishmonger is a wonderful addition to a thriving local shopping area that is Pitshanger Lane. Please patronise this shop..

As other traditional traders get ousted from Chatsworth Road to make way for boutiques and bicycle shops, here's hoping this great greengrocer is here to stay. This is the kind of place that not only stocks chilies, but has several varieties to choose from. Fresh herbs come in generous bunches and it's the only place I've found locally that stocks real horseradish. Everyday fruit and vegetables are plentiful and reasonably priced and there's also a good selection of beans, pulses, oils and whatnot. It's cash only, of course, but the goods are worth every penny.

Gorgeous fresh fruit and veg. And the pork pies and Scotch eggs are wonderful. Quails eggs too. And fresh orange juice. But not a posh shop - just an excellent, fairly priced greengrocer.

The prices for fruit and vegetables in this store are as low as they reasonably can be. They peg them to the wholesale price they pay at the time, so you will find them cheaper at some times than at others. The owner-manager is quite open about it that if you're after grade 1 produce all the time, his store isn't the place. But when you do get it there, it will be at grade II or grad III prices. I regularly buy tomatoes suitable for cooking at 19p or 29p a pound there (the 29p ones are acceptable raw), peppers are very reasonable too, and sometimes there will be fantastic bargains (I once got perfectly acceptable russets at 39p/lb). The cashiers are helpful and scrupulously honest. And when it comes to courtesy when they want to carry things past you, etc., they are on a par with Sainsbury's, although far harder pressed. Between them and the two stalls in the centre of the Wood Green HIgh Road, I get the best deals in fruit and vegetables I know of.

This is a small family owned Italian business that offers excellent personal service and good value for money. In tough times, it is nice to be able to go somewhere to treat yourself to high quality food once in a while.
