I found Jake here on Which local earlier this year when we needed new internal doors and a variety of carpentry and other jobs in our new house. We have used Jake for 4 sets of work already, each one completed perfectly, professionally, to the time and quote agreed. Above all Jake is very easy to work with, particularly if you want to talk through design and agree the best thing to do plus really good value for money.

Rod and his plumber, Duncan Newberry, re-fitted our en-suite at the beginning of June 2014 because of persistent leaks from the shower and blocking waste pipes. The work was carried out with exemplary care to the highest standard and to my complete satisfaction. They were unfailingly cheerful and cleaned up at the end of every day.

Having moved to Lichfield from Milton Keynes last year and not being in the 'first bloom of youth' we were keen to find a 'sympathetic' builder to carry out alterations on our 1990s house. Although the house was in very good condition we needed safe access steps and handrail plus, the toilets were a little tired. We had consulted Which? Local and saw the references, our son had already had work done by them so no contest. Once we had access to the property we contacted LDC and Malcolm quickly visited, assessed our needs of access egress and cloakroom refurbishment and gave us a quote which we accepted. The work was carried out and completed within six to eight weeks, it was done to a high standard. Come March, we decided that the existing family bathroom was unsuitable for our ageing visitors and decided to have it refitted as a wet room so guests wouldn't have to clamber into a bath for a shower! Stuart Bevan LDC's business manager came round and gave us a quotation for a complete refit which we accepted. I asked that the work be completed by the end of June as we were expecting visitors. Stuart is in the process of taking over the business as Malcolm is retiring. Stuart gave us a broad estimate of the work required and arranged a consultation with Walter Tipper' designer to discuss fittings and tiling. As soon as the fittings were supplied to Tipper's work started. Stuart appointed John as lead fitter and he was on site for two weeks to strip out the old bathroom, fittings and wall tiling, the floor and plumbing were completed before the room was then re-plastered throughout. The floor was tanked and tiled and the wall boards around the shower area fitted. Stuart is an excellent organiser and the work was carried out seamlessly. The team is highly motivated and each person takes the lead in their area of expertise. They are a pleasure to have around your house.

I had Terry come and put up some doors for me. He was able to the job in half the time that he had originally estimated and charged me half the original price. He did an excellent job in fitting the doors and I would not hesitate in using him again or recommending him to family or friends.

We picked jake from Which local because we had a completely jammed kitchen draw and were impressed with his reviews. He came today and did an excellent job. He was friendly, pleasant and did a thorough job. We can now get the bottle open out. It was good to get such an impressive person at short notice and what for some would have been a trivial job.

Our kitchen cabinets were probably about 30 years old and hinges and drawer runners were becoming unusable. We also wanted more storage space and a better quality work surface. My wife did quite a lot of leg-work and internet browsing, investigating IKEA, B&Q, Homebase, and John Lewis (which we visted in Solihull). Which? reviews and other reviews made us nervous about most of these, apart from John Lewis, but we were not happy with the difficulty of getting precise specifications and costs from John Lewis, and reviews had suggested they might be expensive. So I came to Which? Local, checked out Kitchen showrooms & fitters and Wayne Kelly stood out as outstanding, so we decided to try him. He returned our call very promptly, came to look at the kitchen and spent some time giving us quite detailed advice, including pointing out things that needed to be done that we had not noticed -- e.g. the state of the ceiling, which had previously suffered from leaks in the bathroom above. So we asked him to provide us with estimates for the proposed work. He recommended a kitchen fitting, claiming that we would need to pay only what they charge him, and recommended worktop supplier, for the worktop as we wanted granite or quartz. We were very impressed by his advice and after receiving his estimate + the kitchen fitters', for everything except the worktop, we decided not to bother with another estimate, on the strength of all the Which? Local recommendations. Wayne handled the order from the kitchen fitter, since he installed all the equipment they supplied, but left us to deal with the worktop company, selecting the material we wanted and arranging times for them to do templating after the new cabinets had been installed. We kept our old oven, microwave and sink, and decided to replace our old ceramic hob with a new induction hob, on which Wayne said he did not have enough knowledge to give us a strong recommendation, but we relied instead on our own research . It was a big job, and the whole process took about a month, during which we had no sink operating in our kitchen so had to camp in the adjoining utility room, using a two-plate portable hob. About two weeks of that month we were simply waiting for the quartzite worktops, using planks as temporary surfaces on the cabinets Wayne and his colleagues had installed. After the worktops arrived Wayne and his electrician quickly finished everything off and we were very happy with the end result. We felt Wayne was completely trustworthy and very considerate and obliging during that rather stressful time and will probably use him again, e.g. possibly for improving our loft insulation, which we have discussed with him. There were some nasty surprises during the process. The first was that the quotation we had accepted from the kitchen fitter it had turned out not to include the extra tall wall cupboards that we had clearly specified and Wayne had clearly requested from them. Because of the dreadful labelling used in the quotation, which did not allow us to check the details, we did not detect the fault ourselves. It was only because we asked them to check that they discovered their mistake, and had to increase the estimate by a significant amount. Removing the old cabinets revealed seriously deficient ancient wiring and we had no hesitation in accepting an estimate for additional work required to tidy things up and feel we now have a much safer system. They re-installed the old flourescent lamps under the cabinets which previously had to be turned on and off individually, but wired them through a single switch, which can now be used to turn all the concealed lighting on and off. The electrician Wayne used charged us separately for his extra work, including doing a complete check of our wiring, which was overdue: DK Electrics Ltd (David Kirtley). We are very happy with him and I'll fill in a separate report recommending him. We do not know whether we could have achieved the same result using another fitter/builder, but are very pleased to have found people whom we are sure we can trust and who clearly have a high level of expertise. For anyone considering switching to an induction hob I can say that we are absolutely delighted with the improvement over our old ceramic hob: the new one works much faster, is much more controllable, and seems to be much safer. I suspect it will reduce our electricity bills, though I don't know by how much. The only disadvantage is that most old cookware (saucepans, frying pans, wok, griddle) are no longer usable. But so far we are managing with the four items that came with the Bosch hob plus a (very heavy) cast iron Denby griddle pan bought from Currys. We may later need a pressure cooker and perhaps a larger frying pan than the one that came with the hob.) Time taken: Contacted Wayne via phone message around 8th Feb. He called a few days later gave advice and left catalogues. We gave him our requirements and a few days later had his and his suppliers estimates (the latter with an error fixed later). He started work on Monday 24th Feb. Because the worktop company had said they might be ready for templating on Monday 3rd March Wayne actually worked all day Saturday and Sunday to get the cabinets ready, though as it turned out theycould not come until Wed 5th. By the end of that day we had our old oven and microwave back in place in the new tower cabinet and connected, and all lights and sockets were working. But there was no worktop and the old sink and new hob could not be installed. So we had to wait till they could deliver the worktops and upstands, which happened on 25th and 26th March after which Wayne and David finished everything off.

Wayne replaced hinges to our integrated Neff fridge. He responded quickly to our request, sought the correct hinges and completed the work in a short time. We will certainly utilise his services again.

Jake removed a storage cupboard from our kitchen. He did a fantastic job for a very good price. We will use again for any future work we require and would recommend him.

Mark (Horton) came today and freed a side gate which had swollen in this winter. Very reasonable prices and a very pleasant chap. His main trade is carpentry but as can be seen from the name of his company, he handles various other trades such as Decorating, Tiling, aspects of gardening, and General Maintenance.
