A new farm shop offering excellent coffee, cakes and lunches. Lovely views over to the beautiful Ochil Hills and great walks nearby around Gartmorn Dam.

This was our first visit to the Laird's House following it's renaissance under new management. Whilst we thoroughly enjoyed our previous visits, we much preferred the more relaxed atmosphere in the place on this occasion. The menu seems to be rather more extensive than before. We both ate from the 3 course fixed price lunch menu, which gave exceptionally good value for money. Each course we had was well pesented, well cooked and generous. The bread and butter pudding was truly the lightest one I have ever tasted. You could almost swear there were no calories in it.......... The wine was good and reasonably priced. We had to ask for water, but that was hardly a hardship. I do hope that more folk discover the place as the large open space cries out for lots of diners to provide more of an atmosphere. The chap in charge was excellent at jollying us all along - he must be exhausted by the end of the day. All in all a really positive experience and I think we will return often both for casual coffees (and scones!)and meals. .

Outrageously good fish and chips. Choice of fish, fresh from the sea, fired in light, delicate batter. Frequently really busy, but worth the wait. Right on the esplanade; or take your carry out to the beautiful harbour side.

This amazing store has three Edinburgh Branches. One (Canonmills) has a restaurant / café incorporated, and another (Portobello) plans to open similar dining facilities in autumn 2012. The best way of describing it is a blend of farm produce, organic food and 'healthy' stuff. In the fruit section you will find a basket of loose fresh apples, strawberries in season, plums etc. There is an open display of many different locally-baked breads with disposable gloves and tongs for hygiene, and old-fashioned brown paper bags. A lot of the products don't appear in the supermarkets, such crispbreads from Germany, locally produced oatcakes and shortbread. There are cheeses, cold meats and fresh vegetables. Cartons of fresh juices which are truly delicious. Much, much more besides. They have happened upon a popular formula as evidenced by the number of customers. It is not cheap, and unless you are very well-heeled you probably would not want to go there for your weekly shop, but it is well worth the visit. The Canonmills store has an adjacent deli and restaurant (Portobello will follow), and that too is recommended. I have been there for lunch, which is self-service and reasonably priced. There is a selection of mostly, but not totally, vegetarian and probably vegan dishes. Salads and fresh bread. Soup too I think. Tables are scrubbed and clean, bistro-style. Carafes of water and glasses on the side. Tables are big, and you may possibly find yourself sharing if you are on your own.

This café is run by a young couple who are dedicated to good customer service and good food. Go there for breakfast, lunch or a coffee and pastries. They are an example to us all. If you want to engage in conversation, they will talk to you. If you want to be left to read the newspapers (provided by them), they will leave you alone. Try the home made fruit scones, jam and fresh butter! The premises are immaculately clean and comfortable. I cannot rate them too highly.

They provide considered attentive service and serve such tasty food using fantastic local ingredients including some from their own allotments. Everything possible is local - I always get the feeling that I am lucky to live so nearby whenever I eat there.

Best place in Edinburgh for Brunch - extensive menu 9am - 5pm. Trendy modern and chic. Good selection of food and wines with good service. Food was hot and delicious and the place was buzzing with life. You may have to wait to get a table in this bistro style cafe but you will not be dissappointed. Simple food cooked beautifully and very resonably priced.

Excellent source of organic food: vegetables, cheeses, dairy produce, bread, flour etc. A bit pricy but worthy of support and a welcome addition to the Portobello shopping scene.

All that they serve is of high quality but overpriced. More than £5 for scrambled egg on toast, far too dear

This is an excellent restaurant that serves really good, inexpensive food and you can take your own bottle too. We have taken many people here and it never fails to satisfy

This is a small and very friendly cafe which also makes it's own exceptional quality chocolate. The best things for me about this place are: - they're next to a bus stop - imaginative selection of cakes, there's always an option for egg free/dairy free/etc diets. They go so quickly, the selction is always fresh and baked on the premises, no wholesale versions here! - they are the only place that make chocolate con churros that are actually good! the only place that compares is Madrid for me and I travel a lot for work (you usually have to wait for the churros a bit). -they have a great selection of teas. -they have a really informal and casual atmosphere - there is a room at the back too, if you are with a bigger group. - the staff are really nice, we once came at about 6pm, an hour before the closing time, and when we finished the waiter was offering free hot chocolate to go, as they make it fresh the next morning. -they are open on a Sunday! I meet my friends regualry there so the date i used the service is 'one of many'

I discovered Mimi's while holidaying in Edinburgh, and my only regret is that I did so on the last day of my stay. This place is fantastic, and has taken the number one cafe spot from my beloved local, The Pig and Pastry in York. I visited Mimi's for breakfast and chose the French Toast. I can honestly say that it was the best I have ever eaten. Huge, doorstep slices of soft bread oozing with maple syrup and fabulous bacon. It put a huge smile on my face. Mimi's also have an amazing range of indulent-looking cakes, and the staff were super friendly. I only wish I could have returned to sample more of the menu!
