We are refitting the kitchen and as part of that we wanted to install a door from the kitchen to the garage and add some shelving. I've used Chris Hadwin before so had no hesitation in using him again. He has done an excellent job knocking through the wall, fitting the fire door to the garage, hanging a second door and putting up shelving in the garage. He is keenly aware of costs and tries to minimise these for his customers - an example of this was advising me that a mini skip to remove and dispose of the rubbish would be £100 (at cost) - however I could arrange removal with the local council from just £15. I wanted Oak doors which Chris didn't supply but he collected them at no additional charge from the supplier - saving me delivery costs. He also reminded me that his original quote had included the cost of him supplying a door and removed that cost from my bill. Chris is honest, reliable and respects your home making sure he makes as little mess as possible and cleaning up every evening. Great job from a great local tradesman.

Used these for a major refurbishment in a grade 2 listed building. They did everything we asked, always consulted us when problems arose and suggested various solutions. They were polite, tidy and good value for money.

I had been having some problems with drainage to my property, having been flooded during the heavy storms of 28th June 2012 and only been back into my property after almost a year waiting for the repairs to be completed. I had called Chris to arrange a visit to discuss new drainage to my property and also ask for his advice on any options I had to try to avoid the catastrophe of my property flooding again. He called at just the right moment when the latest heavy rain storm passed and my property was almost at the point of flooding again. He quickly diagnosed where the problem was and set about trying to resolve the situation there and then, even though he did not have the correct equipment and was only there to give me a quote for work. The problem was down to a blocked drain which was supposed to have been cleared and checked out by a household name in that field only 6 weeks before. Chris waited at the site until I had contacted the drain cleaning company and stayed until they arrived on site to do the work they had originally been contracted to do. I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending Chris and his company for their professional approach to the way they do things, hopefully I will be able to hire Chris to sort out my drainage problems for the long term when I have the plans for what needs to be done.

I employed trader to carry our extensive maintenance on my 1920’s semi in Jesmond: re-roofing, replacing gutters and downpipes, rendering, redecorating internally and externally. I was very pleased with their work and the price was good. They were the best builders I’ve ever employed and I would definitely re-employ them. The company employs men who specialise in various trades: joinery, decorating, plastering, roofing - but all the men can turn their hand to general building work. Plumbing and electrical work were sub-contracted. As most trades are “in-house”, this led to a smooth work schedule: when a specialist trade was needed, the appropriate skilled workman was usually immediately available. I also suspect it led to a lower price. The workmen were very skilled, worked hard (8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday) and took pride in their work. For example, the joiner made me a beautiful new oak front door, modelled on the original. All the workmen were very polite, well-mannered and considerate. They worked well together as a team. They kept the site clean and tidy during the course of the work and left both the inside and outside of the house clean and tidy at the end. Likewise, the managers, Hubert and Rob, couldn’t have been more pleasant, helpful and considerate. They were in touch nearly every day, usually calling round in person to oversee the work, to discuss progress with me and to ask for my decisions on various issues as they arose. They were clearly focussed on delivering what I wanted, unlike many builders who push the client in a direction that suits themselves. They had a high level of attention to detail and extensive knowledge of good building practice. If there were any minor points that I was not happy with, they got the workmen to put them right immediately. The invoices were clearly itemised and correct. I would trust Hubert and Rob to give impartial advice on any building matters.

I got 3 quotes for a new extension to my house in 2013. Jordan Building and Landscaping gave em a comprehensive quote with breakdowns of all large items and some priced options that I had asked for (a couple of other company's ignored this request in their quotes). The quote wasn't the cheapest but the responsiveness gave me confidence in them. Richy and his guys did a great job, turned up when expected and sorted out his own sub contractors for gas, electrics etc. They worked tidily, finished things properly and the attention to detail was great. They made suggestions to improve on the plans which made the end result better. The Building Control officer was very complimentary about them and a number of people have commented on the quality of the finish including the architect who drew up the plans. I can't recommend them highly enough. The only downside might be the time you have to wait to get them as they seem to be very busy a long time ahead.

I have had consistent problems with a surface water drain and have over a 20 year period used a drain clearance service to rectify the fault but it kept reoccurring and last week they were unable to fix the problem anddiagnosed a fractured or collapsed pipe. I contacted Chris who had done work at my home before to see if he could recommend anyone who specialised in this kind of fault. He made an appointment for 8/7/2013 and arrived promptly at 9:00. The fault eventually was traced as cement which had significantly reduced the bore of the pipe when the house was originally built - hence the reoccurring blockages. To rectify it Chris and his colleague lifted the block paving and dug down to expose about 7 feet of piping. They eventually replaced about a 5ft stretch of piping, relaid the foundations and the block paving - they even rectified a dip which had developed in the block paving. The 2 men were there over 6 hours and cleared up after themselves. They used £60 of materials and the entire bill was just £200! I contrast this with the £70 I spent for an hour call out each time I use a drain clearing service. I thoroughly recommend Chris for all types of building work. He's clean and tidy, reliable and I know he will only recommend spending money if he genuinely thinks it is necessary.

This contractor was the lowest quote out of 4 who responded to my enquiry for home extensions and a bathroom installation. The director is Peter Atkinson who is a joiner and project manager. He contracts in other services such as building, plumbing and electrics. I was pleasantly suprised at the quality of the work, especially the bricklaying and the work was done to plan and all the mess cleaned up at the end. Thoroughly recommended.

We have used Paul Irwin for a number of projects, both large and small e.g. hanging doors and patch plastering to major kitchen and bathroom renovations. We had a bad experience with another local builder and were wary when it came to our bigger projects but found Paul through Which? Local, with great results. Paul is a easy to communicate with and reliable, his work is of a very good standard and reasonably priced. We will certainly continue to use him in the future.

I have used Andy's services on several occasions and have always found his service excellent and his charges reasonable. He recently helped me out when a boiler failed; he came within an hour (at 6pm!) obtained a new part and had the boiler up and running in 2 days.

We had our garden landscaped and it is very impressive. I have never seen 3 working lads work so hard and do such a good job as the 3 lads we had as well as their boss Colin.

Norman Anderson and colleagues constructed brick walling and an iron gateway as part of the re-design of the end of our garden. The company did an excellent job, providing sound advice, always consulting on any potential issues and completing high-quality work to the budget and timescale agreed.
